Alan's Tuesday

Kia ora tamariki ma, I've spent a lot of time today out in my garden. I like looking at the flowers and I greatly enjoy helping with the gardening. Today we planted some beautiful flowers - we already had some of them but we wanted some more. Hopefully by the time summer comes there will be a big display of flowers for me to look at.

My favourite part of gardening is digging the holes to put the plants in - I'm really extremely good at it as you can imagine!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan's Challenge of the Day (August 31)

Good morning tamariki ma - yes it's time for challenge of the day again. Mrs Cox laughed when I chose this one because her hair is looking like a truffula tree ( you know, in The Lorax" by Dr Suess) because she was due to have her hair cut on Saturday which obviously got cancelled. She is really looking forward to being able to have it cut. I offered to have a go but for some reason  she isn't keen!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan Gets Back to Work

Kia ora tamariki ma, well back to work today because it's Monday of week 6. I've been commenting on Room four's work online today and I was so impressed. Mind you I've been impressed by all the online work I've seen. Tino pai!

As well as that I've been working on my jigsaw again - did you know that doing jigsaws is really good for your mathematical ability? It's true!

I've even found some time to do some cooking today. Mr Cox is an extremely good cook so he made buns for lunch today - I helped him of course but I wasn't allowed to eat any of the buns which was a bit of a disappointment! (Alan, bread is not good for dogs - Mrs Cox)

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan's Challenge of the Day (30 August)

Morena tamariki ma! Challenge of the day time again! I hope you are enjoying solving these as much as I'm enjoying giving them to you! Try today's challenge - I can do the second one but I'm finding the first one a bit tricky!

Alan's Sunday

Kia ora tamariki ma! I love the weekends and have remembered that Mr Herlihy told me to keep up my exercise so that I  can have lots of treats when I get back to school. If you happen to be chatting with Mr Herlihy online you can tell him that I'm keeping up with my side of the bargain.

On my walk today I saw the best soft toy I've seen yet on my outings. What do you think? I think it's fabulous! I love the way he or she is relaxing on a chair as though it's summertime! It definitely feel like summertime on my walk today!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan's Challenge of the Day (29 August)

Kia ora tamariki ma! I hope you enjoyed yesterday's challenge...remember to check the answer for it underneath today's challenge!

Today's challenge involves dominoes - one of my favourite games. I have my own set of dominoes with Hairy McLairy and his friends on them. They used to belong to Jacqueline ( Mrs Cox's daughter) but when she grew up she gave them to me which was very kind of her.

Alan Hunts for Bears

Kia ora, tamariki ma, I went for another walk today and thought I would see if I could spot some more bears or other soft toys in any windows. It was one of my favourite things to do during lockdown last time so I'm keen to do it again.

I spotted a soft toy in the window of this house - can you see it? It's quite easy to miss!

I'm off to choose on of my toys to put in our window.... it might be something you could do too!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan's Challenge of the Day (28 August)

Morena tamariki ma, yet another challenge of the day from me! I chose this one because it looked reasonably easy although much more difficult looking at it on a screen of course! Give it a go though - using your eyes as a pen! Mrs Cox managed it but I'm not putting the answer up till tomorrow. Of course I also chose it because I like rabbits - they are so soft and I love the way their noses twitch!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan Looks Forward to the Weekend

Morena tamariki ma, it's Friday so I'm hoping tomorrow I hope I get taken for a lot more walks than I did during the week - everyone seemed very busy! We did manage to get a short walk in earlier today which was great. Exercise is so good for you - both to keep fit and to clear your mind. I can always think more clearly after a walk in the fresh air.

One of the interesting sights I saw on this walk was that people have started putting teddies in their windows again. That was something I enjoyed last time we had to stay at home so I was thrilled to see it again. Have you put a teddy in your window? I'm off to find one now to put in ours!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan's Challenge of the Day (August 27)

Kia ora, tamariki ma. It's daily challenge time! I found this one really hard! You might find it easy! We are all good at different things - my spatial awareness is not always great which makes these challenges tricky for me but obviously I'm going to have a go!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan Helps Out Mrs Cox

Good morning tamariki ma, I decided today to do some more chores around the house. I noticed that Mrs Cox had dyed some wool but it had been sitting for days if not weeks waiting to be wound. So I thought I could do it my self. Look! I think I made a pretty good job of it! Quite tricky with paws and it takes a long time to wind the whole ball - 200 grams is a long piece of wool!

Do you like the colour? I do as it's nice and cheerful. Mrs Cox dyes her wool with food colouring which she says is just like combining cooking with a chemistry experiment! I wonder what Mrs Cox will end up knitting with it

Alan's Challenge of the day (26 August)

Morena tamariki ma! Time for the next challenge of the day! This one is all about goats and fences - goats don't really like being fenced in so I hope they don't all jump over the fences once they are built - goats are excellent jumpers!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan Sees What's Going On in the Neighbourhood

Kia ora tamariki ma, I hope you are all feeling good and keeping well. It's been a busy day in my house so I haven't gone for a walk yet! To keep myself amused I stood on our deck and looked out to see what was going on in the neighbourhood. I used my ears as well as my eyes. It was very quiet except when some dogs down the road started barking....I would never behave like that. Perhaps they're bored? I wonder if they have a device where they can access my blog....

I was looking at our neighbour's hedge (you can just see it in the corner of the top photo) and I realised it's a beautiful hibiscus bush! Mrs Cox managed to photograph it for me. Some classes did some art drawing hibiscus flowers when it was Cook Island Language Week.

Alan Perseveres

Kia ora tamariki ma, well I thought I would do some more of my jigsaw today - it's turning out to be really difficult but I'm determined to complete it. As you can see I'm making a little bit of progress but it's quite slow. Can you see the pieces I have put together so far? Can you see what they are? I saw one of these on my walk yesterday - they are so beautiful. Did you know that each of a butterflies wings is the mirror image of the other? They are symmetrical with the axis of symmetry being the length of it's body. Nature can be wonderful!

Alan Starts a New Week

Morena tamariki ma, time for a new week at our virtual school! I did enjoy the weekend I must say. I went for several long walks which were so much fun. Look at the beautiful tree I saw yesterday it's a cherry blossom tree. Isn't it pretty? It was full of bees getting pollen from the flowers to use to pollinate other flowers and perhaps to take back to their hive for food.

As you can see I let Mr Cox come on the walk with me - he enjoyed it very much. He's very keen on exercise. I must try and bring him to see the bike track at school once school is open again. Biking is his favourite sport. He bikes to work in the city every day and usually does a huge bike ride every weekend as well.

Well I'm looking forward to reading all the work you will be doing this week - what I've seen so far has been awesome!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan's Sunday

Kia ora tamariki ma, hope your weekend is going well. Mine is although it has been a bit chilly even inside our house which is not very pleasant. I've started having my naps under a blanket which really helps. We went for another walk today which I really enjoyed even though Mrs Cox would not let me free run in the park! She did say she was sorry but she didn't want me running off as she was trying to keep away from other people. Fair enough I guess at the moment.

I did have fun sniffing everything as I walked along. I try and see how long I can stop at each tree before Mrs Cox says it's time to go. That's quite a fun game for me!

When we got home I decided it was time I helped with some chores around the house so I helped load the dishwasher. That seemed to be a good choice - Mrs Cox looked quite pleased not to have to do it herself. I did offer to lick all the dishes clean but she wasn't quite so happy about that and said NO in quite a stern sounding voice. I can't imagine why!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan's Saturday

Kia ora tamariki ma, it's Saturday so no school but I think it's important to keep occupied so I have a few activities in mind to keep busy. In about half an hour the family is going for a walk which of course I love to do. My other main activity for today is going to be working on my jigsaw - Mrs Cox chose it and it's extremely challenging! It's 1000 pieces and lots of them look the same - I am going to keep on with it though. I never let a challenge stop me from having a go even when it's a tricky one.

When you do a jigsaw how do you start off? My first step is to gather all the edge pieces and try and make the frame. My mother taught me that. Is that what you do or do you do it a different way?

Obviously I will be stopping for meals and sleeps in between bouts of jigsawing! That's essential!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan's Challenge of the Day (21 August)

Morena Glen Taylor School, it's my third challenge of the day. - I chose this one because of the butterflies - I love butterflies and I'm very excited this year because we have suddenly got a big swan plant in our garden that we didn't even plant! I will be counting the butterflies when they emerge from their chrysalises  later in the year.

Keep safe and be kind.

Challenge answer from yesterday: thank you to Mrs Logan for sending me a photo of the correct solution. Your answer may look slightly different but as long as you can count seven sections on your circle you are correct!

Alan Creates a Present for a Friend

Kia ora tamariki ma, well I'm still keeping busy - in fact I've been enjoying myself although I miss being at school. Mainly because I like seeing all my friends ... but if you write to me it's a lot of fun to read what you have been doing. I've had a special project going today. You might remember that during the last lockdown I started learning to knit. Well what better time than now to put my newfound skills to use? I looked through Mrs Cox's wool and her knitting patterns and needles and decided on what I wanted to create. It's quite tricky knitting when you have paws but I persevered and hey presto! Look what I made! It's for a friend but I can't tell you who it is yet because it's a surprise for them. Hopefully tomorrow I can tell you - it is someone you know if you go to Glen Taylor School.

I've also been continuing my jigsaw...more about that tomorrow!

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan's Challenge of the Day (20 August)

Kia ora tamariki ma, it's time for my challenge of the day again! I hope you enjoyed trying to work out yesterday's challenge. Remember you can get others in your whanau to join in too if you like.

Alan's Busy Day

Kia ora tamariki ma, well it's been a busy day for me today. I went for a lovely big walk as Mr Herlihy told me too (so I can have treats when we get back to school) and played with my toys and also started my jigsaw puzzle....well I got the jigsaw mat and the box with the puzzle in it out! I really wanted to do some cooking but everyone was too busy to help. Luckily I remembered that there were chores to do so I went and did some gardening! I planted some pansies to go in the pots with the daffodil bulbs I had already planted. The daffodils aren't out yet but I can see the green shoots poking up so it might not be long. Can you spot Bun-bun among the pots trying to eat the plant leaves? Naughty Bun-bun! I had to tell him off about that!

Anyway I hope you have had a good day.

Keep safe and be kind.

Alan's Puzzle of the Day (August 19)

Morena tamariki ma, Alan has discovered a set of challenge cards to get you thinking! Unfortunately he lost the answers so he really needs your help to work them out! During our home learning he will post one challenge every day. He would love to hear your answers! Alan's challenge will be available from 9am each morning and he will blog later each day to let you know what he has been up to.

Alan Keeps Busy

Kia ora tamariki ma, well we are in lockdown again - not what we expected or wanted but we have done it before and we can do it again! I have made a list of things I'm going to try and do everyday as you can see in my photo. I'm especially looking forward to doing some cooking with Mrs Cox....or it might be Mr Cox as he is actually a much better cook than Mrs Cox.

I might hunt out a jigsaw to do too - I really love jigsaws! Sometimes it's a bit tricky holding the pieces in my paws so Mrs Cox has to help me - I point to the piece I want with my nose and she puts it down where I show her. Teamwork!

I'll be back tomorrow with another blog. See you then and don't forget to let me know what you've been up to. I love to hear from you.

Alan's Weekend Away

Morena tamariki ma, I hope you all had a great weekend - I certainly did. My friend Hank has moved to the country - well Cambridge which is quite rural. It's in the Waikato so it only took us about and hour and a half to get there. I've been missing my friend Hank so it was so wonderful to see him. He has a new house which is gorgeously sunny and a very big backyard to run around in. We had a super time running around together and we visited two different dog parks while we were there. The grown ups decided to go to a cafe so we went too and basked in the sun while they drank their coffee.

I was so exhausted after my lovely break that I slept all the way home! I hope you had a nice weekend too. I'd love to hear about what you got up to!
